Portimonense: Benfica travel south

Liga Portugal Bwin: Vizela 1-1 Portimonense

Portimonense extended their winless run this year to 10 games last Sunday afternoon when achieving their fourth successive draw at Vizela.

A relatively uneventful encounter saw the home side take the early initiative until a 17th-minute Lucas Fernandes free kick allowed Willyan to head past Pedro Silva at the near post against the run of play.

The Algarveans could subsequently easily have doubled their lead but for Angulo heading over under pressure from close range and Fernandes hitting the side netting. Those misses were almost immediately punished with Schettine powering home the equaliser from a Kiki Afonso corner not long before the interval.

There was little in the way of real goalmouth action following the restart with a flurry of Vizela corners at one end and a blocked Nakajima shot at the other providing the highlights as the match laboured towards its somewhat predictable conclusion.

A more dynamic performance will be hoped for this Saturday evening when Benfica visit the most likely sold-out Municipal Stadium (6pm kick-off, also live on SportTV).

Manager Paulo Sérgio’s men generally play well against the bigger clubs and, although losing this fixture 1-5 last season, caused a minor sensation when beating the then still Jorge Jesus-managed Eagles 1-0 at the Stadium of Light back in October. Força Portimonense!
