Doctors at Porto’s São João Hospital in Porto are embarking on a study of the brain activity of patients with Parkinson’s disease who have undergone deep stimulation surgery, in order the hope of understanding how to prolong the good control periods of the disease, the head of the project has explained today. Talking to Lusa, Dr Manuel Pinto said:”When patients undergo surgery, their symptoms improve a lot in the initial phase. It’s like a honeymoon period. But it’s a transitory period and, after two weeks, the disease returns and you have to switch on stimulation and resume medication. We don’t know what’s going on in this initial (honeymoon) period when the patient improves a lot – the idea is to study it so that we can repeat it in the future.”
