Porto needs 400 municipal police officers, says mayor

Increasingly fustigated by episodes of violence and crime, Porto “needs 400 municipal police officers”, as soon as humanly possible. Mayor Rui Moreira told reporters today “what we would like to have is 300 by the end of the year, or the beginning of next”, and the rest could follow afterwards. It is not in the city’s remit to hire police (it is something that can only be sanctioned by PSP police/ the government), but it can afford them through the municipal budget, he said: “We can’t hide it, the city of Porto has been confronted with episodes of insecurity. The data that is public knowledge, as well as the daily complaints we receive, indicate an increase in thefts on the public highway, youth violence in nightlife areas, drug trafficking and consumption in public spaces and even hate crimes against immigrants.”
