From today, Porto’s streets are to start being cleaned with recycled water as part of a €750,000 investment in which the city council estimates a saving of around one million litres of water PER DAY. The first part of this undertaking was presented today, at the ETAR (water treatment centre) of Freixo, at a ceremony attended by environment minister Duarte Cordeiro. Deputy Mayor Filipe Araújo told reporters that another plan in the pipeline is to make recycled water available to private entities for irrigation purposes, “at a cheaper price” than regular drinking water.
