The best ranked Portuguese beach is in the Algarve municipality of Lagoa
The beauty and allure of Portuguese beaches has been recognised yet again, with four of its beaches featured in the 2025 edition of The World’s 50 Best Beaches – Europe, a ranking that highlights the continent’s most outstanding beaches.
This year’s ranking includes two beaches from the Algarve and two from the Azores.
The top ranked Portuguese beach was Praia da Marinha, located in Lagoa in the Algarve, placed 20th overall. Nestled between limestone cliffs, this small yet iconic beach is known for its crystal-clear waters, sea caves, and a distinctive rock formation that, when viewed from above, reveals a near-perfect heart shape. Finding a spot on the beach during the busy summer months can be a challenge, however, given its small size and its huge reputation.
The next Portuguese representative on the list is the Vila Franca Islet in the Azores, ranking 25th. Classified as a Regional Nature Reserve since 2004, the islet is described by many as a paradisiacal beach destination. Formed by a submarine volcanic eruption, the islet features a striking nearly circular crater, about 150 metres in diameter, which connects directly to the sea. This natural lagoon creates a unique and sheltered swimming spot, drawing both visitors and marine life alike.
Praia do Camilo is the third highest ranked Portuguese beach on the list, with the Lagos beach coming in at 28th. Located near the borough’s famous Ponta da Piedade beauty spot, the small beach is famous for its 200-step wooden staircase which provides access to the beach.
Finally, placed 41st on the list is the Azores’ Praia do Fogo (Fire Beach), best known for its unusual sea temperature, which remains pleasantly warm throughout the year thanks to underwater hydrothermal springs.
However, no Portuguese beach was featured on the international ranking. The European list is led by Cala Goloritzé, located in Sardinia, Italy, which also leads the international list. Second and third positions on the global list were awarded to Entalula Beach in the Philippines and Bang Bao Bay in Thailand.
The World’s 50 Best Beaches list is curated by a privately held company named The World’s 50 Best Beaches, co-founded and led by Tine Holst, who serves as CEO.
The selection process involves contributions from over 1,000 travel industry professionals, including travel experts, influencers, and local “Beach Ambassadors.” These contributors assess beaches based on criteria such as uniqueness, biodiversity, environmental preservation, natural soundscape, accessibility, tranquility, and minimal overcrowding.
