Portugal Day commemorations have begun today (the eve of the national holiday) with President Marcelo visiting Pedrógão Grande – one of the areas devastated by killer fires in 2017. The agenda kicks off at the Memorial constructed in memory of all those who lost their lives. Tomorrow, the official Bank Holiday, will see various initiatives in Pedrógão Grande, and then on Tuesday, Marcelo will be in Switzerland to celebrate with members of the Portuguese emigré community.

The memorial 'opened' without any kind of ceremony last year, which President Marcelo and the government of the time later admitted was unfortunate. Marcelo's solution was to commemorate Portugal Day in 2024 in Pedr´gão Grande.
