The UN special rapporteur for occupied Palestinian territories said in Lisbon today that Portugal should “join South Africa” in the case against Israel, which accuses the Tel Aviv government of genocide in the Gaza Strip. At the end of a public hearing in parliament, Francesca Albanese challenged Portugal not to ‘hide’ behind its European integration to avoid taking a position: “Let’s not let bureaucrats have the opportunity to use European law and institutions to avoid taking responsibility. International law takes precedence over European law. Don’t use the European consensus to avoid taking responsibility. That’s cowardice.” Ms Albanese however was only talking to left-wing parties. None of the more right wing groups attended the hearing.
