Portugal falls five spots in ‘best country for foreigners’ ranking

Portugal currently sits in 15th place, according to Expat Insider 2024

According to a new survey, Portugal has “fallen five spots this year” in the ‘best country for foreigners’ ranking.

The ranking has been produced by InterNations since 2014 and evaluates 53 countries. This year, according to the report, Panama is considered the ‘best country for foreigners’, followed by Mexico and Indonesia.

So what happened? Well, it looks as if Portugal’s high costs for accommodation/ bureaucracy and ‘digital services’ seem to be the problem.

Then again, the ranking has only one European country in its ‘top slots’ – Spain (considered the 4th best country to live in) followed (hold on to your hat) by Colombia.

As rankings go, this one looks as if it is more geared to generating ‘a good headline’ than carrying much in the way of substance.

For example, when it comes to the quality of life index section, Qatar comes in 4th place; Portugal in 7th.

Portugal doesn’t figure in any of the ‘best’ in the above: ‘ease of settling in’; ‘culture and welcome’; ‘local friendliness’ (where again Colombia features, alongside Oman and Egypt among others), or ‘finding friends’.

In final analysis, authorities here focused on boosting Portugal’s popularity and allure are unlikely to lose much sleep over this analysis.
