A study by the European federation for transports and environment has shown that Portugal has 713,000 “highly polluting” diesel vehicles in circulation. The number has grown over the last three years (in other words, since the Dieselgate scandal first hit).
On a European level, there are 43 million “highly polluting” diesel vehicles on the roads – 14 million more than when the scandal was exposed, say reports.
Portugal’s pegging is in 11th place, behind France (with 8.7 million highly polluting vehicles), Germany (8.2 million) and UK (7.3 million).
Environmental association Zero has denounced the situation as “inadmissible” in that three years on from the scandal that rocked the motor industry, the European Union has still not come up with any effective ways of limiting polluting vans, buses, lorries and cars.
