Portugal has Europe’s highest proportion of one-child families

Portugal is the country in the European Union with the highest proportion of families with only one child, Portuguese statistics platform PORDATA revealed today, on the occasion of World Population Day. “It’s a country of only children,” said an official source, noting that only 27% of families have children and, of these, almost two thirds have only one child. In the European Union, large families (with at least three children) represent 13% of families with children, which is more than double the proportion of large families in Portugal, which only muster 6%.
