A major boon from immigration has been revealed today by INE Statistics Institute: Portugal hasn’t had so many children under the age of 15 for more than two decades. Of the 132 municipalities where numbers have increased, the top 10 are Porto, Torres Vedras and boroughs in the Lisbon metropolitan area. They reflect the evolution of the birth rate and migratory flows, explains reports. When it comes to births, INE confirms that 6,134 more babies were born in 2023 (35% in the Lisbon metropolitan area and 15% in Porto) – 22% of them had a foreign mother. In 2023, the population in Portugal totalled 123,000 more residents, 1.9% were under the age of 14; 44% were over the age of 65 – showing there is still a long way to go to recover the necessary balance of a ‘thriving country’.
