Portugal has joined widespread condemnation of Israel’s latest move against UNRWA – the UN agency for Palestinians, stressing that without UNRWA’s “essential humanitarian aid”, the dire situation in Gaza can only get worse. Paulo Rangel, minister for foreign affairs has written over social media: “Portugal condemns the approval of legislation by the Knesset [Israeli parliament] that revokes UNRWA’s privileges and immunities, making action in Gaza and the West Bank unfeasible (…) With the United Nations and other partners, we continue to support UNRWA.” The practicalities of this support – and how it can help besieged Palestinians – are not so clear.
