The Portuguese Air Force has acquired six medium-lift Sikorski UH-60 Black Hawk military helicopters to integrate into its rural firefighting force. The contract (sum so far unspecified) signed with America’s Arista Aviation Services includes training for six pilots and 21 mechanics, as well as technical maintenance until 2026. The first two aircraft will be delivered early 2023 (in other words, in time for next summer’s fire season). Black Hawks can transport as many as 12 firefighters and respective equipment, and carry up to 2,850 litres of water for discharge. According to reports, 81% of the cost of these new appliances will be met by PRR community funding.
