Portugal to exceed aid to Ukraine for last year by “around €5 million”

Minister of Defence Nuno Melo announced today that Portugal should exceed the aid to Ukraine planned for last year by around five million euros. The announcement was made on the sidelines of the 25th meeting of the Contact Group for the Defense of Ukraine, which is taking place today at the US air base in Ramstein, Germany, under the chairmanship of the United States of America and in the presence of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Nuno Melo stated that, in 2024, Portugal committed to helping Ukraine with around €221 million, but it exceeded this investment. Subject to final confirmation, the value of aid will be “close to €226 million”, Melo told Lusa while the work of the group was still ongoing. The minister added that Portugal’s commitment to helping Ukraine resist its illegal invasion by Russian (and now North Korean forces) “will continue into 2025”.
