Portugal to have the least amount of children in EU by 2050

By 2050, Portugal is expected to be the European Union country with the least amount of children (11.5%) in its population, according to forecasts by Eurostat.

Children under 15 currently represent 14.6% of the population, making Portugal the eighth EU country with the lowest percentage of children.

But if the number drops 3.1%, as is expected, in the next 35 years Portugal faces the serious likelihood of becoming a country where children are a novelty.

In general terms, the EU as a whole is also expected to register a drop in the number of children, albeit much less significant – from 15.6% to 15%.
