Portugal’s choice for EU commissioner vows new administration will get Europe ‘back on track’

Portugal’s choice for EU commissioner Elisa Ferreira has said she believes the new administration – taking over in November – will get Europe back on track.

Seasoned politician Ferreira – currently second in command at the Bank of Portugal – has told ECO online that she is “confident” the new commission under Ursula von der Leyen “will advance with a European agenda that will stop the disorientation into which the continent has fallen in the post strike period”.

The 63-year-old economist by profession said she was “completely comfortable with the text of the programme that the Commission will be following”, describing it as a “positive leap” forwards.

And following on from international praise (click here), Ferreira reiterated the idea that Portugal is “a little oasis in Europe”.

It is still unclear what exact role Elisa Ferreira will be given (this will be revealed by Ursula von der Leyen when she takes over from outgoing president Jean-Claude Junker).

Ferreira will be substituting the centre-right Carlos Moedas who has held the post of EU commissioner for research, science and innovation since 2014.
