Portugal’s hottest years on record (so far): 2022 and 2023

Last year was the second hottest on record in Portugal, with seven heatwaves, according to today’s annual climate bulletin released by IPMA (sea and atmosphere institute). According to the document, only 2022 was hotter than 2023, with last year’s average annual air temperature reaching 16.59 °C – 1.04 °C higher than the 1981-2010 ‘normal value’. Average maximum air temperature was also the second highest since 1931, with the average minimum temperature was the ninth highest. Heat waves last year occurred in spring (three), summer (also three) and autumn (one).
