With so much focus on Saturday’s jailbreak, journalists have started remembering the last ‘famous jail break’, from Caxias, in 2017. The Portuguese convict ‘still technically on the run’ infuriated police by posting provocative videos in the first few months, posing with an assault rifle. These now appear to have stopped – and PJ national director Luís Neves says the young man in question is living in Israel (where he has dual nationality). He had actually left the country BEFORE police started looking for him, Neves concedes. Israel does not have an extradition agreement with Portugal, thus the Caxias escapee will stay free, as long as he doesn’t travel to a country that does, and draw attention to himself.
