Gonçalo Pires Marques was nominated for his project Casa Donovan, recognised for its innovative use of wood and commitment to sustainability.
Portuguese architect Gonçalo Pires Marques is one of the finalists for the prestigious “Building of the Year 2025” award from ArchDaily, a highly esteemed international architectural recognition.
His project, Casa Donavan, stands out for its innovative use of wood and commitment to sustainability. It is an example of excellence in contemporary architecture.

Casa Donavan stands out for its distinctive approach to wooden construction, which the architect himself describes as “almost artisanal.” Collaborating closely with a master carpenter was crucial for ensuring the precision and quality of the execution. Furthermore, the choice of thermotreated wood, free from chemical treatments, underscores his commitment to sustainability.
In addition to the selected materials, the house was designed to minimise the need for air conditioning systems. The intelligent use of sun exposure and natural cross ventilation contributes to a reduced environmental impact. A conscious effort was also made to select local suppliers, minimising travel and imports to reduce the ecological footprint.
For Gonçalo Pires Marques, this recognition reinforces Portuguese architecture’s position internationally: “Portuguese architecture is an area recognised among peers worldwide like few other areas. As in Portuguese cinema, it is frequently mentioned and even awarded. In fact, Portugal is the only country in the world with two living Pritzker Prize winners, which reflects the quality and influence of our work.”
Casa Donavan is now in the final stages of voting for the “Building of the Year 2025” award. The public can support this Portuguese project by voting here.
