Portuguese bishop elevated to cardinal

D. Américo Aguiár, the Portuguese bishop on the nation’s screens this year due to World Youth Day, was yesterday elevated to a cardinal by Pope Francis in the Vatican, “reinforcing Portugal’s influence in the elite of the Catholic Church”, writes Correio da Manhã. The Vatican now has six Portuguese cardinals. Nine other countries have more cardinals, but Portugal’s positioning, considering the country’s size, is strengthened. At 49 years of age, D. Américo is also one of the youngest ever cardinals.
