Portuguese climber Maria Conceição reaches summit of K2

Maria Conceição, the first Portuguese woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest, has now conquered K2, in Pakistan, the second highest mountain in the world, she announced today. In a short telephone call to Lusa news agency, the 47-year-old climber said that after several weeks of bad weather, her group took advantage of a “very short window” to climb to the top of the mountain, which they reached at around 10:00 local time (06:00 in Lisbon). K2, at 8,614 meters, is not much smaller than Mount Everest (8,848 meters) – but known to be one of the world’s most challenging climbs. João Garcia was the first Portuguese climber to reach the summit of K2, in 2007.
