Food aid organisation ‘Banco Alimentar Contra a Fome’ has announced that 2.270 tons of food was donated during its nationwide food drive last weekend (November 28-29).
Food bank president Isabel Jonet told Lusa news agency that she was expecting more donations, but still thanked the Portuguese people and volunteers who helped during the drive for their “generosity”.
In the Algarve, the amount of donations went up 4%, with 140 tons of food donated at supermarkets across the region.
In a statement, the region’s food bank said it was “proud” to be trusted by the Algarve people and promised to continue working to “help those who really need it”.
Around 42,000 volunteers collected donations at over 2,000 outlets across the country.
Food collected will be delivered to 2,600 charities which together support over 425,000 people.
According to the organisation, the amount of food collected was very similar to last November’s food drive.
The initiative was part of a larger European campaign which saw 264 other food banks collecting food for those in need.
Anyone keen to give can still do so online up to Sunday (December 6) via www.alimentestaideia.net
