Portuguese economy goes from €600 million deficit to €7.5 billion surplus

The Portuguese economy posted an external surplus of €7.5 billion up to November, compared to a deficit of €600 million in the same period in 2022, the Bank of Portugal (BdP) has said today, giving a run-down of figures which essentially point to a positive increase in the contribution of travel and tourism. The ‘good financial news’ does not seemingly change any of the crises in the country, nor has it really filtered through to citizens’ lives. As commentators have said time and again, “you cannot eat the deficit”. Conversely, one probably cannot eat the surplus either.
