Meta says it will use public information from EU to train its AI tools
Portuguese users of Meta’s social networks have already started receiving a consent email regarding the use of their public data to train the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
After Meta announced last week that it would use public information from adult users in the European Union (EU) to train its AI tool, Meta AI, some Portuguese users have already received an email where they can object to the use of their data for this purpose.
Says the email: âWe will use your interactions with AI features on Meta and your public information, such as posts and comments from accounts of people aged 18 or over, based on legitimate interests.â
Public information âincludes your username, profile picture, activity in public Facebook groups, channels and pages, as well as comments, ratings or reviews on Marketplace or a public Instagram accountâ.
Meta also states that when it collects public information from the internet or data licensed from other providers to train models, these may include personal information.
To refuse authorisation for the use of this kind of information, the company says people must fill out an ‘online’ questionnaire, available through the following link: https://www.facebook.com/help/contact/510058597920541, or access the help center of their account in Meta products.
âIf your objection is accepted, we will not use your interactions with Metaâs AI features or your public information,â says the company – clearly reserving the right to ânot to acceptâ objections.
As Lusa stresses: âEven if you object to the use of your data, the company can always use user information that appears anywhere, such as in an image shared publicly on the company’s products or by someone who uses themâ.
