Portuguese State seeks reimbursement of €713,000 paid to family of Ihor Homeniuk

The Portuguese State is demanding that the three former SEF inspectors – jailed over the death of Ukrainian job seeker Ihor Homeniuk – cover the bulk of the compensation payment made to their victim’s family. Explain reports, “when the government decided to indemnify Ihor Homeniuk’s family, it was clear that it would be asking for a reimbursement in event of convictions, which is what transpired”: the three former inspectors, Luís Silva, Duarte Laja and Bruno Sousa are serving nine year jail terms in Évora. Through their lawyers, the men have contested the demand, suggesting the decision to pay compensation to the dead man’s family was “merely political” – and even arguing that the amount set was ‘exhorbitant’ taking into account their victim’s monthly earnings. Says SIC: “it is up to the Public Prosecutor’s Office to pronounce on the issue”
