Museum dedicated to fortress’s role in the 17th century
After years of neglect, the Santa Catarina fortress in Praia da Rocha is finally due to undergo a much-needed revamp.
The previously State-owned landmark, which overlooks the world-famous beach and the nearby marina, has been yielded to the municipality, which will start by renovating its stairs and access points before carrying out improvements to its walls and creating a museum dedicated to its role as a defensive structure in the 17th century, potentially featuring archaeological finds from the Arade River.
In an interview with Barlavento, Portimão Mayor Álvaro Bila says this project aims to not only “preserve the underwater archaeological heritage of the river but also add value to the fortress as a high-impact cultural and tourist asset”.
