The preliminary cost estimate for repairing fire damage to Ponta Delgada’s Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo, in the Azores, is €24.3 million, the Azorean Regional Secretary for Health revealed today. Mónica Seidi stressed this is “a preliminary estimate”, that would allow the hospital to return to caring for the local community. Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo, on São Miguel island, was critically damaged by a fire on May 4, which forced the transfer of all in-patients to other health units in the Azores, Madeira and the mainland. Central government has pledged to cover 85% of the repair costs.
