President Marcelo joins religious procession in Loulé

‘Festa da Mãe Soberana’ is considered the “biggest religious celebration south of Fátima”

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa joined thousands in Loulé for the ‘Festa da Mãe Soberana’ religious celebration on May 5.

True to his usual laidback self, Marcelo vowed to join the procession and follow it through to the end, even if he were the last person to reach their destination.

Held every year in honour of the town’s patron saint Nossa Senhora da Piedade (Our Lady of Piety), the event is described as the “biggest religious celebration south of Fátima”.
