Portugal’s president has shown today how little hope there is of a rapid end to the conflict in Ukraine. Talking in the Royal Riding Arena, in Lisbon, following decorations awarded to search and rescue teams recently returned from Turkey, he referred to late summer/ autumn before any likelihood of a “path to peace”. Before that, the next few months will be “decisive”, he said, with Ukrainian forces focused on recovering “what it lost from the invasion a year ago, and the Russian Federation (trying) to keep what it has occupied over the last year”.
