With so much going on on the national political scene, Madeira too is in a state of ‘flux’: President Marcelo is due to dissolve the regional assembly next week, which will result in elections (May 26 being the most likely date touted so far). Madeira’s political woes, like the mainland’s, were kick-started by a criminal investigation (that has yet to move forwards in any tangible way, shape or form). Like on the mainland, Madeira’s political leader Miguel Albuquerque ‘resigned’. He is today ‘fighting’ to stay in the frame (seemingly of the opinion that his resignation was not necessary). Internal elections to choose the PSD leader to take Madeira into the next elections have been ongoing all day, and for the first time in year, Albuquerque has competition: results are due later this evening.
