President Marcelo visits “impressive” FATACIL fair

Marcelo praised FATACIL, which is “bigger and better” than ever… but could still  attract more foreigners

Portugal’s President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, took part in the inauguration of Lagoa’s FATACIL fair last Friday (August 16) and showered the “impressive” event with praise.

I’ve been here several times in the past, but today’s FATACIL has nothing to do with those past editions. It is bigger and better, not only in terms of quantity but also quality,” Marcelo said at the inauguration ceremony, highlighting the “massive participation of those who live in this municipality, in neighbouring municipalities, in the region of the Algarve and the entire country.”

Marcelo – accompanied by Lagoa Mayor, Luís Encarnação – visited several stands throughout the fair and enjoyed part of the concert by Portuguese band ‘Quatro e Meia’, which kicked off the event’s long list of performances by chart-topping national artists.

Attracting more foreigners was singled out as FATACIL’s next big goal by the president, who also highlighted the presence of “many, many young people, which also means the future.”

FATACIL is taking place until Sunday (August 25) and is one of the Algarve’s longest-running events, attracting thousands of visitors every year. While its concerts pull a large portion of the crowds, what truly sets the fair apart is its selection of business exhibitions, equestrian events, handicraft – with craftspeople often showcasing their craft live for visitors to see – and variety of food stalls and restaurants.

An impressive number of around 700 exhibitors are taking part, while live entertainment will be divided among the three stages. Organisers are also promising the “largest Fun Zone ever” and “hundreds of areas of interest.”

Still due to take the stage at the event’s main stage are João Pedro Pais (August 19), Carolina Deslandes (August 20), David Carreira (August 21), Julinho KSD (August 22), Amália Hoje (August 23), Calema (August 24) and Xutos e Pontapés (August 25).

Described as the “biggest event south of the Tejo River”, FATACIL will be held at the municipal fairground from 6pm to 1am.

Tickets can be purchased online at BOL, or in person at CTT post offices, FNAC and Worten stores or the local Balcão Único office, with prices ranging from €5 for a daily ticket for one person and €16 for a ‘family ticket’ (four people older than 12) to €30 for a 10-day pass. Children aged 12 and under can enter for free. Tickets can also be purchased on the days of the event at the venue.
