Marcelo underscores importance of ‘national interest’
Portugal’s president has said today that ‘in the interests of the country it would be ideal’ for the government to have a long mandate.
Speaking briefly to journalists before boarding a train with the prime minister in Switzerland as part of the extended June 10 celebrations, Portugal’s head of State was full of hopes for future stability.
“The prime minister will have more (trips) because he’s in charge of foreign policy, he’ll be at the NATO summit in July, at the European political community summit, he’ll have a bilateral trip to Angola…”, he said.
Asked if, when talking about June 10 next year, he envisaged the PSD/CDS-PP government lasting that long, the president replied that this would be “ideal in the interests of the country”.
Luís Montenegro put on a similar show, saying he hopes to be present not only at the next Portugal Day celebrations, but at all of them “for four years” – as the legislature technically doesn’t end until 2028.
All in all, this was a moment of good spirits, with both men insisting on the “excellent institutional and personal relationship” that they share.
Regarding today’s agenda, after a first day spent in Geneva, Marcelo highlighted the meeting with President of the Swiss Confederation, Viola Amhed.
“That’s the State component. Let’s not forget bilateral relations, because of our community, and let’s not forget that there will be a summit in Switzerland in a few days‘ time,’ he added, referring to the Peace Summit for Ukraine that will take place near Lucerne on Saturday and Sunday, and at which the he will be accompanied by the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel.
