Portugal’s President of the Republic has welcomed UNESCO’s classification of Portuguese equestrian art as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
“Unesco has awarded the classification of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity to Portuguese Equestrian Art, highlighting the specificities of this art in our country, its nature as popular and erudite culture and the particular relationship between horse and rider,” wrote President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in a statement on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic.
Marcelo congratulated “all its promoters and practitioners, and in particular the Portuguese Association of Purebred Lusitano Breeders, Parques de Sintra and the municipality of Golegã, which are responsible for the candidature”.
The president also emphasised that “UNESCO’s choice will henceforth be an important contribution towards safeguarding, researching, teaching and promoting Portuguese equestrian art”.
