Best photos from Portimão Photography Race will be exhibited at Portimão Museum
Portimão Museum will host the inauguration of an exhibition of the best photographs from the 24th Portimão Photography Race on Saturday, September 14 at 5.30pm. The event will also feature the competition’s prize-giving ceremony.
This year’s edition, which took place between May 18 and July 31, attracted 65 photographers from all over Portugal and of 10 nationalities.

Described as the “most popular event of its kind held in the south of the country,” the Portimão Photography Race challenged photographers this year to follow six themes inspired by the work of Manuel Teixeira Gomes, the only Portimão-born President of the Republic in Portuguese history, who gave Portimão its city status in 1924.
The themes were named after excerpts or titles from his works:
theme 1 – “By the docks and gardens of the city”;
theme 2 – “It is the magnificence of the vibrant light, waves of resplendent light that envelop everything in gold and precious stones: a heap of gems, perhaps…”;
theme 3 – “Singular People”;
theme 4 – “It was at that time that I began to look at the landscape as if contemplating paintings in a museum (…) I spent much of my days walking around the outskirts of the town, where there are truly enchanting viewpoints…”;
theme 5 – “On the way to Alvor. How this landscape, so familiar to me, now seems new! How everything awakens and takes on unprecedented aspects”; and
theme 6 – “Rocks that the action of the sea and winds have eroded, scattered along the coast in rock formations of the most diverse shapes: pyramids, sphinxes, castles, and basilicas; and that on land are carved into cylindrical pits, deep caves, circular tunnels, amid collapses of multi-coloured cliffs, evoking the ruins of colossal cities.”

The exhibition will feature 18 photos presented by the winners of the four awards of the Photography Race, as well as the six best photos from each theme. It will be open to visits every Tuesday from 2.30pm and 6pm, and from Wednesday to Sunday between 10am and 6pm, until November 10. Admission is free.
