Prosecutor shelves case of logging on disputed land in central region

Portugal’s public prosecutor has shelved the inquiry into the felling of trees in the central region of Lousã in 2023, considering that there is no evidence of any criminal offence. The case brought together a claim from companies Silveira Tech and Colquida, another from the Lousã local council and a third from the Baldios de Vilarinho, with all three entities alleging that the company Álvaro Matos Bandeira & Filhos, based in Góis, cut down trees on land that they owned, near the village of Silveira, in the Lousã hills. This was always a strange case: for example at the time of the complaint, the municipality claimed that there would be a minimum loss of “around €30,000”. Later, mayor Luís Antunes stated at the inquiry that the loss would be €325”, writes Lusa.
