Civic/ environmental movement ‘Proteger Grândola’ is defending the “total revision” of Grândola’s PDM (plan for municipal development) on the basis that the current vision “seeks to licence touristic projects far beyond the maximum threshold established for tourist intensity”. The movement also argues that the town hall has done “no recent studies on the available water resources, pushing the responsibility for doing so onto the APA (…) In addition to tourism projects, there are projects for golf courses and agro-industry in one of the areas of the country most vulnerable to drought. It seems irresponsible to us to approve an increase in tourist capacity without a comprehensive assessment of the cumulative environmental impact that the sum of these projects will create – and without a study confirming that the aquifers that supply water to the municipality will be able to withstand the increase in planned consumption”.
