Portugal’s opposition Socialist Party (PS) has criticised what it calls the government’s lack of intervention to contain disturbances in Greater Lisbon over the last two nights, callilng for a “measured intervention to guarantee safety and multidisciplinary work in the neighbourhoods”. Speaking to journalists in parliament, PS parliamentary leader Alexandra Leitão said the party is following the situation “with attention and concern”, stressing “an idea of calm and order so that problems can be resolved correctly and without exaggerated tensions (…) We regret the death of the citizen in an incident with the police. All the circumstances surrounding this death must be investigated, and that is fundamental. I won’t say any more about this until we know exactly what those circumstances are,” she added.
