PSP Carnival Operation resulted in 723 arrests 

Forty-three firearms and 24,100 doses of drugs were seized during the eight-day operation.

The Public Security Police (PSP) revealed in a statement that during the eight days of the “Carnival in Safety 2025” police operation, it made 723 arrests in Portugal. Of these, 283 were for road crimes, “namely 138 for driving a vehicle while drunk and 144 for lack of legal qualification to drive.”

The statement also noted that 51 citizens were arrested for various crimes such as theft and robbery, while 76 individuals were detained on suspicion of drug trafficking.

During this period, the PSP seized 24,100 individual doses of various drugs, along with 43 firearms, 29 bladed weapons, approximately 17,000 pyrotechnic articles, and 33 kilos of liquid explosive material.

Regarding road safety, the PSP adds that 17,017 drivers were inspected, 52,180 vehicles were controlled by radar, and 5,539 traffic violations were detected.

“Of the traffic violations detected, 609 stand out for speeding, 558 for lack of mandatory periodic inspection, 193 for lack of mandatory civil liability insurance, 119 for using a cell phone while driving, 93 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 50 for lack of or incorrect use of seat belts and 24 for lack of or incorrect use of restraint systems”.

In eight days of the “Carnival in Safety 2025” operation, the PSP recorded 1,177 accidents, resulting in 358 injuries – 15 serious injuries and 343 minor injuries – and four deaths. Two of the deaths were the result of a collision in the municipality of Lagoa (Azores) on February 24, one following a skid in the municipality of Seixal on March 1, and the other following a skid in the municipality of Machico (Madeira) on March 3.
