PSP police mourns officers killed by train while chasing burglars

PSP police in Loures are mourning the loss of two young officers who were killed by a train yesterday (February 25) while in pursuit of two burglar suspects.

The tragic accident happened at around 11.30am when officers Santos, 23, and Raínho, 26, were chasing, on foot, two men suspected of having broken into a house in Bobadela. They were hit by the train as they crossed the railway tracks near the Sacavém train station.

It was a stretch prohibited to pedestrians but that the young suspects used to escape the police. As the officers tried to catch up with the suspects, they were hit by an Intercidade train travelling from Lisbon to Porto at 180 kilometres per hour.

Emergency teams were called to the scene but nothing could be done to save them.

PSP has announced that the two suspects, 17 and 20, were arrested shortly after the accident and had criminal backgrounds for “robbery, theft and evading authorities”.

They are expected to be heard at Lisbon North District Court tomorrow.
