Public prosecutor accuses Navy mutineers of “insubordination through disobedience”

Almost two years since the Mondego mutiny hit the headlines, and months after the matter was last dealt with by the Navy, Portugal’s public prosecutor has accused the 13 sailors involved of the crime of “insubordination through disobedience” – an accusation which, if proved, could lead to jail terms. What this all means will come clear in the coming days.

The men’s lawyer, Paulo Graça has always alluded to the state of the Mondego (the reasons behind the men’s refusal to set out on a mission to accompany a Russian vessel in Portuguese waters) and to the fact that it could never have effectively monitored the vessel, as its top speed was half that of the Russian boat.
