Public prosecutor investigates credit card spending of former Setúbal mayor

One time mayor of Setúbal, Maria das Dores Meira, is under investigation by the Public Prosecutor’s Office over the use of credit cards emitted in her name, and used between 2017 and 2021. According to reports, the cards totted up €103,000 in expenses, including costs for air travel, hotels, meals abroad and meals in Portugal. Ms Dores Meira – who is running as an independent in the municipal elections next year, but who used to represent Setúbal’s communists – has stressed most of the charges will have been made by town hall services, not by herself. Indeed, she believes this whole inquiry has come as a result of an ‘anonymous complaint’ by political adversaries.
