After so many false starts, the official questioning of the three men whose arrests have toppled the government of Madeira is set to finally begin this morning. News reports today refer to “hundreds of phone taps that reveal corruption”, and to the discovery of a diamond wrapped in baking foil on the desk of one of those arrested – former mayor of Funchal Pedro Calado. Questioning is set to continue well into the rest of the week, with bail measures unlikely before the weekend.
