Members of Quinta do Lago Golf Club took the opportunity to present cheques to four local causes at their annual Christmas competition and lunch on Sunday, December 7. In total, €10,000 was raised in events held by the club through the year and the club chose local causes where they felt the donations would make a real difference.
The causes to benefit were the Associação Social e Cultural de Almancil (€2,500), which provides care, both residential and in outreach programmes, to the elderly in the Almancil area, the Organização Pais-em-Rede (€1,000), a national organisation helping out families with particular needs, the Instituto D. Francisco Gomes (€2,500) which runs the Casa dos Rapazes, a boys’ home in Faro, and the Associação Oncológica do Algarve (€4,000), providing professional assistance to cancer sufferers across the region.
In addition, in campaigns that run throughout the year, club members have purchased €5,000 worth of food for the Centro Paroquial de Quarteira, and provided essential goods for young mothers to the Instituto António Aleixo, valued at another €5,000.
Club Captain Ole Jespersen said: “We are delighted to be in a position to support the local community who we know from first-hand experience are finding life tough in these difficult times. We wanted to find causes where we knew our donations could make a real difference.”
Hermes Alberto, president of the Associação Social e Cultural de Almancil, said: “We were honoured to be chosen by Quinta do Lago Golf Club who have provided support to us over many years. Their donations really do make a difference”.
