Rain and wind return

A kilometres-long front arrives this Friday, bringing rain, thunderstorms, wind, giant waves and even snow. Nine districts are on alert.

Wet and windy conditions return this Friday, and a cold front many kilometres long will completely change the weather.

This cold Atlantic front, spanning from the Iberian Peninsula all the way to Sweden, will bring waves of more than 10 metres, winds over 90 km/h, rain with thunderstorms, and even snow in the north this Friday and into the early hours of Saturday.

Currently, nine districts are under a yellow alert for rain, thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds, while the entire coast will also be on alert, initially yellow, followed by an orange warning above Lisbon.

Waves exceeding 10 metres are anticipated; therefore, orange warnings have been issued for Lisbon, Leiria, Coimbra, Aveiro, Porto, Braga, and Viana do Castelo districts. Wind gusts reaching over 95 km/h will place Leiria, Coimbra, Viseu, Aveiro, Guarda, Porto, Braga, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real, Guarda, and Bragança on yellow alert. Heavy rain, with the possibility of thunderstorms and hail, starting in the north, will swiftly extend to the rest of the country and is expected to subside during the early hours and morning of Saturday, prompting the IPMA to issue warnings for Coimbra, Viseu, Aveiro, Guarda, Porto, Braga, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real, Guarda, and Bragança.

Snowfall is expected, but only at the highest altitudes, specifically in Serra da Estrela, above 1700 metres.

Once the front moves past Portugal and advances into northern Europe, Portuguese territory will once more experience anticyclonic conditions. In other words, it will enjoy sunny weather and mild maximum temperatures, although there will be considerable thermal variation concerning minimum temperatures, particularly inland.
