Portugal’s weather takes new turn for worse
IPMA, the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute has placed 15 districts in mainland Portugal as well as the archipelago of Madeira under a yellow warning as of tomorrow, due to forecasts of heavy rain/ snow/ wind and sea turbulence.
The snow is potentially likely to fall in the districts of Aveiro, Castelo Branco, Bragança, Coimbra, Viseu, Braga, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo and Leiria.
The strong wind and sea turbulence warnings being valid until Tuesday for the districts of Aveiro, Coimbra, Braga, Porto, Faro (meaning the Algarve), Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria and Beja.
Madeira is tipped to get ‘much the same’ with the added accompaniment of thunderstorms (most likely today). Sea turbulence will continue until Tuesday. IPMA mentions ‘the north coast’ where searches for a missing French couple were already ‘called off’ last week due to worsening conditions.
In IPMA terminology, the yellow warning is the second least serious on a scale of four and means “risk situation for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation”.
According to the institute, rain will continue through the week in most areas. IPMA’s descriptive forecast, for example, for Tuesday even suggests there could be snowfall in Monchique… but reading between the lines, the likelihood of the kind of heavy, prolonged rain that the south needs is slim.
