Regime pact over floundering health service “depends on policies”, says PS

PS Socialists have responded to President Marcelo’s appeal for a ‘regime pact’ over the floundering SNS public health service, saying “it all depends on the policies and measures” put forwards by the minority centre-right government. MP João Correio stressed the SNS is in the public interest, thus it cannot be ‘weakened’. “It is only after we know exactly what measures the government wants as alternatives to the emergency plan (currently not having the desired results) that we can make considerations and comments about it). Whatever the situation, “there is an unshakeable principle for the PS”, he said: “Any policy for the SNS must involve strengthening it, not diverting public resources to the private sector”. For the PS, he stressed, the private sector should “continue to exist in a logic of complementarity”.
