Renewable energy production supplied 88% of electricity consumption in February in Portugal, a month in which electricity consumption increased by 0.1% year-on-year, according to figures released today by REN. According to REN – a Portuguese electricity and natural gas transmission company responsible for the overall management of the national electricity and gas grids – non-renewable energy production accounted for 10% of supply, with the remaining 2% being supplied using imported energy. REN also indicates that February saw new highs in the power delivered to the grid by the three technologies, with hydroelectric power reaching a maximum of 6,906 Megawatts (MW) on 28 February, wind power 5,019 MW on 29 February, and photovoltaics 1,919 MW on the 19th of last month. Since the beginning of the year, the hydroelectric producibility index has stood at 1.21, wind producibility at 1.03 and solar producibility at 0.89, according to the same information. REN, like EDP, is majority Chinese owned.
