Renovations begin at iconic Praia da Rocha fortress garden

One of Praia da Rocha’s most emblematic locations is undergoing a revamp to restore it to its former glory

The municipal council of Portimão has announced the start of renovations at the iconic but neglected garden of Praia da Rocha’s Santa Catarina fortress.

The garden, located next to the fortress, boasts amazing views over the popular beach and provides a rare green refuge in the otherwise urbanised tourism hotspot.

The renovation project is being carried out by Master Natura – Gestão de Espaços Verdes, which won a public tender for the works, and will aim to turn the garden into a shining example of what a green space should be.

According to the municipal council, the revamp project aims to recreate iconic areas of the garden, such as the lookout point over the cliffs. Additionally, access routes will be renovated, and contemporary elements like weathering steel railings, modern public lighting, and new urban furniture will be introduced while “maintaining harmony with the existing stone walls, stairways, and benches”.

As part of the refurbishment, the garden’s vegetation will be revitalised with the introduction of Mediterranean plant species and other flora that “reflect the cultural landscape of the Algarve, preserving the garden’s original character.”

As the council points out, the Santa Catarina fortress garden is “one of the most emblematic locations in Praia da Rocha” and is renowned for its history, location and “stunning views.”

The works, expected to last seven months, are described by the local authority as part of its “commitment to preserving and enhancing this unique space”.
