Bárbara Caetano da Mota, a researcher at the Faculty of Medicine of Porto (FMUP), has won the Pepe Scholarship – sponsored by the footballing legend of the same name – worth €18,000, to develop a research project in the area of health. Her plan is to try and understand the effects of diabetes treatment on the changes caused by high-fat and high-sugar diets in the brains of adolescents. Ms Caetano da Mota received the award today at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology (IPO) in Porto, saying initiatives like these enthuse researchers, thus “promoting medical progress and improving the health and quality of life of the population in general.” The Pepe Scholarship was launched last year, with the aim of “encouraging scientific talent to contribute to scientific production and the results of investigation”.
