Restoring nature best way to prevent fires on Iberian Peninsula – WWF report

Restoring nature is the best way to prevent fires on the Iberian Peninsula, according to the international environmental organisation World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in a report released today. Written by WWF Spain and ANP/WWF, an association that works with the international organisation in Portugal, the report, “Restore to Prevent”, analyses the evolution of fires on the Iberian Peninsula and the role that land abandonment plays in major fires. The two organisations note that ecological restoration reduces the risk of fire, promotes biodiversity conservation, the provision of ecosystem services and generates wealth in rural areas. By promoting mosaic landscapes and recovering degraded and desertified areas, “we make forests more resilient and improve the quality of life of people living in rural and urban environments,” say the document’s authors.
